Grand Palace Bangkok — Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

Practical details that make the difference between a frustrating and an extraordinary visit.

Opening hours and tickets

Open 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM daily (last entry 3:30 PM); 500 THB entry includes Wat Phra Kaew, Grand Palace, Dusit Maha Prasat, and Coin Pavilion.

Dress code

Strict — shoulders must be covered, long trousers or skirt below the knee; sarong and shirt rental available at the main gate (50 THB deposit); flip-flops OK.

Best arrival time

8:30–9 AM for smaller crowds and manageable heat; by 11 AM tour groups arrive in force; midday is brutal heat and maximum crowds.

Guided tours

Official guides available at the gate (around 400 THB for 2 hours) — recommended for first visit; audio guides also available; free guided tours by volunteers (check schedule online).

Don't miss

The Ramakien murals in the gallery surrounding Wat Phra Kaew — most visitors walk past them; allow 20 minutes to walk the full circuit.

Avoiding scams

Tickets are sold only at the official entrance — ignore anyone outside claiming the palace is closed and offering an alternative tour, a persistent and well-known scam near this site.
