Travel Insurance for Bangkok & Thailand

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

A practical guide to choosing cover for Bangkok, reading the exclusions that matter, and knowing what to do if you need medical treatment or make a claim.

Do you need travel insurance for Bangkok?

For most travellers, yes. Bangkok has excellent medical care, but visitors generally should not assume treatment will be free or that a hospital will automatically bill an overseas public health system. A useful policy is less about recovering the price of a delayed suitcase and more about protecting yourself against a large medical, evacuation or cancellation bill.

Buy cover for the trip you are actually taking. A short city break, a month travelling around Thailand and a trip involving motorbikes, scuba diving or trekking can create very different risks and exclusions.

Start with medical and evacuation cover

Look first at overseas emergency medical treatment, hospital admission, ambulance costs and medical evacuation or repatriation. Avoid choosing a policy only because the headline benefit limit looks large. Read the excess, sub-limits, pre-existing-condition rules and the insurer's process for approving expensive treatment.

Save your insurer's 24-hour assistance number offline. In a serious emergency in Thailand, emergency medical services can be reached on 1669; Bangkok also operates the 1646 medical emergency line. Tourist Police can be reached on 1155.

Motorbikes are a major exclusion trap

Many visitors discover too late that riding a scooter is not automatically covered. Policies may require a valid licence for the vehicle class, compliance with local law, a helmet and restrictions on engine size or riding activity. If you plan to ride, check the wording before departure rather than assuming a generic adventure add-on fixes everything.

If you would not be legally licensed to ride the same class of vehicle at home, treat that as a warning sign and verify the insurer's rules in writing.

Activities, alcohol and other exclusions

Scuba diving, climbing, Muay Thai training, organised sport and higher-risk adventure activities can require specific cover. Alcohol or drug-related incidents may also affect claims. Read exclusions for unattended belongings, valuables, electronic devices and cash; these limits are often much lower than the overall baggage figure.

Cancellation and disruption cover

Cancellation can be useful when you have substantial prepaid flights, hotels or tours. Check which events count as an insured reason and what evidence is required. "I changed my mind" is usually different from cancellation caused by a covered illness or another event listed in the policy.

For delays and missed connections, note the waiting period before benefits begin and whether the policy expects you to claim from an airline or other provider first.

Pre-existing medical conditions

Declare conditions exactly as the insurer requires. A condition that feels minor to you may still fall within a policy definition. If screening is offered, complete it honestly and keep the insurer's written decision. Do not rely on a travel companion's interpretation of the wording.

Buying insurance after you have already left

Some insurers sell cover after departure, but waiting periods and restrictions can apply and an event that has already happened will not become insurable retrospectively. Buying before departure also gives cancellation cover a chance to operate before the trip starts.

If you need a hospital in Bangkok

For a life-threatening emergency, seek care first. For non-urgent or high-cost treatment, contact the insurer's assistance team as soon as practical. They may direct you to a suitable facility, arrange a guarantee of payment or explain what documents are needed. Bangkok has both public and private hospitals; private international hospitals are often easier for visitors to navigate in English but can be costly without cover.

What to keep for a claim

Keep the policy certificate, passport details, receipts, medical reports, prescriptions, police or property reports where relevant, airline correspondence and proof of ownership for valuable items. Photograph important documents and store a copy away from your phone.

Report theft promptly when the policy requires it, and obtain written confirmation rather than relying on a verbal conversation.

A sensible Bangkok insurance checklist

Before paying, confirm emergency medical and evacuation cover, the excess, pre-existing-condition rules, motorbike and activity exclusions, valuables limits, cancellation conditions and the 24-hour assistance process. Then save the policy number and assistance number somewhere accessible offline.

Policy terms change frequently. Use this guide as a checklist, then rely on the current product disclosure statement or policy wording for the contract you are buying.
