Durian & Tropical Fruit in Bangkok

Updated 2026 · Totally Bangkok

Bangkok is tropical fruit paradise — durian, mangosteen, rambutan, sala and dozens more, bought from carts and markets.

The king: Durian

Notorious for its smell (banned on public transport), beloved by many Thais — try Monthong variety for richest flavour; sold by the kilo (80–200 THB/kg) or opened portions.

Mangosteen

The 'queen' of Thai fruit — purple shell, white segments inside, delicately sweet-tart; only available April–September; extraordinary when fresh.

Rambutan

Red hairy skin, white lychee-like flesh — very sweet; sold in clusters from market carts; best June–September.

Rose apple (Chomphu)

Pale pink, crunchy like a watery apple, mild sweetness — ubiquitous in Thailand, unusual elsewhere; often eaten with salt-sugar dip.

Where to buy

Or Tor Kor Market has the best quality fruit; pushcarts throughout city for everyday buying; pre-cut fruit in bags from 40 THB on street corners.
